Record audience for BBC 6 Music

The publicity surrounding the uncertain future of BBC 6 Music has helped the station achieve its biggest ever audience of over one million listeners.

The figure is a 47 per cent increase in what the station had three months ago, rising by 328,000 listeners from 695,000 to 1,023,000.

The share of listening has increased as a result of the extra listeners, doubling from 0.4 to 0.8, which will help towards the campaign to save the service.

The Beeb's other digital station facing the axe, Asian Network, didn't enjoy as much publicity as 6 Music, and has in fact lost 3,000 listeners, down to 357,000 from 360,000 last quarter.

1Xtra posted a record 663,000 weekly listeners – up on last quarter’s 531,000 and last year’s 616,000, and Radio 7 also drew its biggest ever audience with a weekly reach of 1.05 million – up both on last quarter (931,000) and last year (984,000).
