Smooth appoints national MD

GMG Radio's north west managing director Andy Carter has been appointed as MD of Smooth Radio UK.

The north west based service will officially launch on October 4th, and will see Andy take on the role in addition to his current duties.

GMG Radio Chief Executive Stuart Taylor said: “Andy has a great understanding of both the Smooth brand and of UK commercial radio in general and is the perfect person to lead Smooth Radio as it enters the next, important phase.”

Andy Carter said: “This is an incredibly exciting time to be leading Smooth Radio’s transformation into a UK wide station. I’ve been consistently impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm shown towards the brand by the team working at Smooth, its listeners and commercial partners. The growth possibilities for our UK station are enormous.”

After joining GMG Radio as launch Programme Director of Real Radio Yorkshire in 2001 Andy progressed through the company, joining Real Radio Wales as Managing Director. He took on additional responsibility as MD of Smooth Radio London and West Midlands from 2006 and two years later took up his position in the North West, where he oversees Real, Smooth and Rock Radio stations broadcasting in the region.

Before joining GMG Radio Andy was a Regional Director for Radio Investments, with nine stations within his north of England patch.
