Format changes for GMG Radio

Ofcom has approved various format changes for a number of radio stations owned by GMG Radio.

They include the ability to include more networking on Real Radio and less speech at peak-time on Rock Radio Manchester.

The tweaks to the formats of Real Radio Scotland, Real Radio Northeast, Real Radio Northwest and Real Radio Yorkshire brings them into line with the current industry standard ability to provide just seven hours a day of local programmes rather than Ofcom's previously stated 10.

Since the Digital Britain Report, radio stations can opt to provide just seven hours a day of locally-made programmes in return for a greater commitment to local news.

In a separate format change, Rock Radio Manchester can now provide "A substantial amount of relevant speech" at breakfast and drive, rather than having "speech-led peak time programming".
