Express FM takes BBC commentary

BBC Radio Solent has agreed for a community radio station to re-broadcast its commentary of all Portsmouth FC games.

Express FM and the local BBC station will each provide their own match build up, but join together for kick-off, in what is thought to be a unique arrangement.

The BBC has a policy of supporting community radio, and Express FM's station director is more than happy with the arrangement: "Our station is all about Portsmouth and with this new partnership we can continue to fly the blue-and-white flag with pride.

“We’ll also continue our successful series of Pompey discussions and phone-ins so fans can continue to ‘express’ their views.”

BBC Radio Solent’s managing editor Chris Carnegy also serves as company secretary of Express FM. Adam Blackmore, Solent’s sports editor, said “This is a great result. Commercial radio had ended its Pompey commentaries while Solent sometimes has to share-out its frequencies between three League clubs at once, so this deal secures commentary on an FM frequency, home and away, for Pompey’s passionate army of fans.”

The first shared commentary will be on Tuesday, March 1 when Fratton Park hosts Scunthorpe.
