Smooth Operations to produce 2012 Sonys

Next year’s Sony Radio Academy Awards ceremony – the 30th annual event – is to be produced by Smooth Operations.

The production firm – part of the UBC Media Group – takes over from Zafer Associates which has always previously produced the night at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Over the last 20 years, Smooth Operations have devised numerous successful and long-running formats for many clients and have managed and provided coverage for a range of major events as diverse as the Folk Awards, the UK Music Hall of Fame, the Brits, the New Orleans Mardi Gras and the Rio Carnival. In recent years they’ve also produced the main room at the industry’s Radio Festival.

Smooth Operations’ Managing Director, John Leonard is a multiple Sony Gold Award winner himself and has also been on the event’s committee and judging panel in previous years. He said: “The Sony Awards are entering a new era and we are flattered and delighted to have been awarded this prestigious production contract at such a critical time. We are looking forward to delivering an evening that will be a high spot for everyone in the industry.”

John Myers, Chief Executive of The Radio Academy, added: “We talked to a number of companies and it is clear, with their all-round experience and expertise, they are the right company to produce the biggest radio event of the year. I look forward to working with them on these prestigious awards.”

The 2012 Sonys were launched last week and take place on Monday 14th May. There will be 34 categories this year with entries opening soon and a closing date of 8 February 2012.
