AFC Bournemouth cancels The Bay re-brand

A football club which “bought” a community radio station late last year has cancelled plans to re-brand the station.

AFC Bournemouth published a statement which said The Bay 102.8 in Poole would become Play Radio from February 14th 2012 but now say it isn’t.

At the time, AFC Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell said: “It`s a decision that both myself and my partner feel is a good private acquisition and one that will help AFC Bournemouth in getting their message out to the local community. Bought as an investment, we hope to associate the station with the Cherries and other local sporting events in both Bournemouth and Poole.”

However, a follow-up statement apologised for the press release and said: “AFC Bournemouth apologise for any misguidance caused by the press release issued by the club this week regarding The Bay 102.8 FM. The Bay 102.8 FM will not be rebranded as Play Radio as stated in the press release.

“The Poole and Bournemouth public will continue to enjoy the programming provided by The Bay 102.8 FM, and both the club and station remain committed to following Ofcom’s regulations.”

Reports suggest the station has moved to a new studio inside the football club’s stadium – outside the community radio station’s official coverage area.
