GMG Radio to light up Blackpool again

GMG’s Real and Smooth Radio brands have been announced as the media partners for the Blackpool Illuminations switch-on show later this year.

It will be the third year the commercial radio group has run the event, following many years of domination by the BBC.

In 2010, GMG brought Robbie Williams to the seaside town for the event, while last year’s show included Olly Murs, Pixie Lott, The Wanted and Russell Watson, with the switching on of the lights done by TV funnyman Keith Lemon.

Andy Carter, GMG Radio Group Managing Director, said; “Being part of one of the UK’s biggest and longest running events is a great honour and we’re once again looking forward to bringing fantastic entertainment to Blackpool for the Switch On ceremony. As with the last two years, we’ll again be broadcasting live from the event across the UK on both Smooth Radio and Real Radio and in the run up to the big day we’ll be first with all the details..”

The event takes place on 31 August with an expected crowd of around 20,000.

Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, comments, “We are delighted to be working with Real and Smooth Radio again to produce the Illuminations Switch On event. The last two years have proved to be a huge success with over a hundred thousand tickets applied for to see this world class show.

“2012 is a landmark year for the Illuminations as it marks the centenary year of the Lights in their current form and also will be the first year that the Switch On event is held on the Tower Festival Headland. Because of this, we are looking forward to working with Real and Smooth to stage a spectacular event on Blackpool’s brightest night of the season!”
