Mini-Radio 1 festival heads to Torbay

With no Radio 1’s Big Weekend this year because of the Hackney Weekend, the station has announced a smaller event to take place next month in Devon.

Presenters including Chris Moyles, Fearne Cotton, Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and Mistajam will head to Paignton, Torbay for a day of live broadcasts on 19th May.

Performances from the likes of Example, Jaguar Skills and Eric Prydz will be broadcast live on Radio 1 on the Saturday between 4 and 11pm.

The BBC is making 8,000 free tickets available for locals in Torbay and nearby areas. It’s far fewer than the usual Big Weekends which attract up to 50,000 people, and the special Hackney Weekend ahead of the Olympics which has 100,000 attendees. Ahead of last year’s announcement that Carlisle would be the 2011 venue, there had been speculation Torbay was in the running after organisers went to look at potential sites.

Jason Carter, Event Director, says: “Radio 1 are very excited to finally be returning to the south coast. We have a great summer of events for this really special Olympic year for the UK and are delighted to be launching our summer in Torbay with such a great DJ line-up.”
