Sony Awards – Beryl and Betty take Gold

Two BBC Radio Humberside presenters have become the oldest Gold winners for the Sony Radio Academy Awards in its 30-year history.

86 year old Beryl Renwick and 90 year old Betty Smith started presenting on the station alongside David Reeves six years ago after they were talent spotted during a guided tour of the BBC studios.

They beat Frank Skinner and Adam and Joe to take home Gold – for Best Entertainment Programme Award – and received a standing ovation when collecting the award.

They’ve been all over the papers as well as the TV since picking up their nomination – and again today after being crowned Golden Oldies.

Their show goes out at 6pm on Saturdays on Radio Humberside, and they spoke to Radio Today’s LIVE webcast shortly before collecting their award, which you’ll be able to listen again to soon.

The Sony radio award judges said: “A joyous, entertaining double act, having fun with the medium and unconstrained by any ingrained ideas of what works and what doesn’t.

“They give a voice to a sector of society unrepresented on radio, and do it with a joy that puts many of their fellow broadcasters to shame.”
