Former GMG Radio Chief Executive and Sony Awards Chairman John Myers has been appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Sunderland.
Sunderland’s broadcast journalism and media students have each been presented with a copy of his book Team – It’s only radio – to mark the author’s links with the university.
In June John received an honorary fellowship of the University of Cumbria for his outstanding contribution to radio and became a visiting professor there.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media Graeme Thompson: “John Myers is one of the most successful radio executives in the UK. He has spent thirty years in the business – starting out as a technical operator, quickly moving on to be a presenter and station boss before ending up as one of the most powerful and influential executives in British Media.
“Our students will learn a great deal from John about the rapidly changing broadcast industry and also about how best to make a career in this most competitive of sectors.”
John will also work with the team running Sunderland’s student radio station Spark FM.
“I am thrilled to be asked to be a part of the University of Sunderland’s media department,” said John. ” It is already recognised as being one of the best providers of media and journalism degrees in the country with multi-award winning teams and state of the art facilities. It will be a pleasure to enthuse students about all that is great about radio.”
