Sony winners Beryl & Betty leave radio

Eighty six year old Beryl Renwick and Ninety one year old Betty Smith will host their final show on Christmas Day just seven months after winning a Sony Gold.

Their final show, which will see them host an hour long special with producer David Reeves, will air between 1pm and 2pm on BBC Radio Humberside.

The three have not broadcast together since the summer due to Betty’s health, which has prompted the decision to make one final show.

‘The very fact that these girls say what they like about whatever they want gave the programme a unique voice and a strong connection to an audience of all ages,’ Reeves told the BBC’s Ariel.

‘Beryl and Betty are the embodiment of the idea that it’s best to be yourself on the radio,’ he said. ‘As much as I thought I was getting the best out of them – they too were getting the best out of me, allowing me to create something truly special.’

The pensioners stole the show at the 2012 Sony Radio Academy Awards, winning Best Entertainment Programme ahead of fellow nominees Adam & Joe at BBC Radio 6 Music and Absolute Radio’s Frank Skinner.
