James Alexander Gordon retires from BBC
One of the BBC’s most recognisable voices, James Alexander Gordon, is retiring from reading the weekly classified football results on 5 live.
The announcement was made in a series of tweets by Head of BBC Sports News and BBC Radio Sport Richard Burgess. He said: I’m very sorry to announce James Alexander Gordon is to retire from reading the classified football results on BBC radio.
“James recently underwent surgery to remove his larynx after contracting cancer. Sadly his voice is now not strong enough to broadcast. Surgery was successful, but James has decided “with great sorrow” to give up “the most exciting part of my career, the classified results.
“We are all desperately sad at this news – 5pm on Saturdays will never be the same again without JAG’s warm, familiar voice.”
The 77 year old has been reading the results since 1973 at the BBC and was heard each Saturday afternoon on BBC Radio 5 live.
