5 live welcomes LBC to the national scene

BBC Radio 5 live controller Jonathan Wall has said the addition of LBC to Digital One is good news for radio listeners in the UK.

Global Radio announced this morning it’s taking news-talk station LBC nationwide after 40 years of serving London.

He told RadioToday LBC will give more choice and a boost for digital radio – important to all sectors of the radio industry. “Healthy competition from commercial rivals has only improved BBC Radio 5 live over recent years and I know it will continue to do so. I wish everyone at the newest national speech station the very best of luck,” Jonathan said.

LBC will use multiplex space currently occupied by Birdsong after Jazz FM went off air. Ofcom has agreed a request from Digital One to allow a change of service from jazz to speech. The description of the new service is “a speech service of news, views, discussions, phone-ins and entertainment catering for audiences across the UK”.

LBC’s current Format is:

24-HOUR SPEECH SERVICE OF NEWS, VIEWS, DISCUSSIONS, PHONE-INS AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR LONDONERS (WITH ANY MUSIC FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES ONLY)
