UK radio execs launch new Cyprus station
Radio presenter, producer and business owner Sandy Beech is to host the breakfast show on a new radio station in Cyprus, Sunshine Radio.
The Music4 owner has teamed up with Transmitters R Us owner David Shapiro to launch the new FM station in Paphos this April.
David will be the new station’s founder and CEO whilst Sandy will be Brand and Content Director. Sandy is probably most well known for his jingle and imaging work with BBC Radio 1 and many other UK and international stations; however, Sandy’s background is as a radio presenter/producer.
He began broadcasting on various local commercial radio stations in West Yorkshire, working his way up to Atlantic 252, Virgin and Capital.
David Shapiro previously owned a radio station in the USA and has experience in broadcast engineering both in the UK and abroad. He was also instrumental in setting up Transmitters’R’us, servicing broadcasters in the UK and abroad.
David has worked for the past five years to secure the new broadcast licence for Sunshine Radio, following his first trip to Cyprus in 2007. Sandy, who has lived permanently in Paphos for the past four years, has been looking for an opportunity to start a new station. The two met by chance just a month ago and almost instantly agreed to work together on this exciting new venture.
David Shapiro told RadioToday: “Sandy stumbled across my name on a internet forum where I had made a post looking for people who were interested in helping me get the new station up and running. Obviously I have the technical knowhow, but I was looking for people to help with the programming and branding. When Sandy contacted me and I realised just how much experience he has and how currently active he is in the UK radio and media business, it was a quick and easy decision to team up. Sandy and I completely agree on what is presently missing on the radio for listeners and advertisers in the Paphos area and I have no doubt that together we will deliver something very special. It is very reassuring for me that Sandy has the skills to deliver a world class station and this is backed up by the fact that he has once again been asked to be a judge for the prestigious Radio Academy Awards later this year.”
Sandy Beech has already gained experience in operating a business in Cyprus as he is the major shareholder in Peyia Medical Centre – a medical centre and dental clinic aimed at British residents in and around Paphos that opened just over a year ago, now has a team of 17 Clinicians, Doctors, Surgeons and Dentists and already has over 2500 registered patients.
“I invested in the medical centre as I truly believed it was much needed and I am so pleased with the success of that business so far. In addition, this business has allowed me to truly understand the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in Cyprus and has further helped me understand the general make up of the British population in our area too. This is going to be invaluable when making programming decisions at the radio station,” Sandy said.
Sandy is currently in London working on the station’s jingle package at Abbey Road Studios – which will be a re-sing of Music 4’s Magic 105.4 package.
He continued: “I believe our station will sound great whether you are in Paphos, London, New York or Los Angeles. I will do my very best, even with very tight budgets, to make sure 90.8FM Sunshine Radio is a world class radio brand. I’m hopeful that in time, it will be a perfect candidate to be licensed to other broadcasters around the world along the same lines as the Jack FM brand.”
The station will be using a mixture of live and voice tracked shows and some UK presenters are already lined up for voice tracked shows. However, Sandy is also looking for presenters who would like to make the move to Cyprus.
Sandy told us: “We will be running a format that is a combination of Magic 105.4, Heart and BBC Radio 2, so I am looking for quality adult presenters who are happy with a ‘more music less talk’ format. Budgets are tight but life in Paphos is very pleasant and if I can find the right people who fancy ‘a bit more sunshine’ in their life, then this will be an exciting opportunity for all concerned!”
The station is scheduled to launch on 90.8FM during April 2014 in Paphos, Cyprus and will be available online at sunshineradio.com.
