6 Music presenters to recommend new music
Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Mary Anne Hobbs and Steve Lamacq are to host a new 6 Music show recommending new music for listeners.
6 Music Recommends will air at midnight Tuesday to Friday, will give each presenter an hour to share their new music discoveries.
In addition listeners can also follow each 6 Music Recommends presenter in BBC Playlister where they can see presenters’ personally chosen tracks – as well as those from other shows across the BBC – and save them to their own personal playlist.
Through the BBC Playlister app in Spotify, listeners can also see the 6 Music Recommends Playlist – a collection of new tracks tipped by 6 Music DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley, Mary Anne Hobbs, Tom Robinson, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, and more.
To mark the launch of 6 Music Recommends, on Monday 10th March from 10am to 10pm every single track played on 6 Music will be a new release – that’s anything that has been released since the start of 2014.
Jeff Smith, Head of Music, 6 Music says: “6 Music Recommends, alongside our well established and influential weekly new release playlist, highlights BBC Radio 6 Music’s different and innovative approach to new music and music programming. The power of our presenters’ passion and expertise for music will be further highlighted and it will help us continue to build our reputation as the best and most creatively programmed music channel anywhere.”
Lauren Laverne presents her first 6 Music Recommends show on Tuesday 11th March from midnight to 1am. She will curate an hour of her favourite new releases showcasing musical genres from folk to hip hop, African music to electronica.
Tom Ravenscroft takes over the baton on Wednesday 12th March with music including Tycho, Jaberwocky and Moderat.
Tom said, “6 Music Recommends is a cool new place where I’ll be hanging out and playing my favourite new music from the week, some of it pillaged from other shows on the station, some from my own mind. I’ll be picking my top tracks each Wednesday night and trying to persuade the listeners to allow them into their hearts and perhaps into their record collections. All the tracks are also all in one place with BBC Playlister”.
Mary Anne Hobbs will be personally sharing an hour each Thursday of the most beautiful new music, of every texture, colour and origin.
Mary Anne said, “I have 60 minutes every week to change people’s lives with sound, and that’s exactly what I’m aiming to do.”
And on Fridays Steve Lamacq takes over. He will present his 6 Music Recommends show from the South by South West in Austin Texas, an annual Festival showcasing the best in exciting new musical talent.
Plus, Steve’s Friday evening show that day (4-7pm) also comes live from the SXSW festival, as he brings the sound of Texas to the listeners, with a special show showcasing the brand new music he has discovered on his trip. Joining him on 6th Street are alt-pop duo Thumpers, anthemic songwriters Longfellow, electro-pop act Cousin Marnie, and riff-heavy rockers from Brighton, Royal Blood.
