North West Wales DAB digital radio multiplex to launch

Five services will be available on DAB in North West Wales from next month when the latest Muxco multiplex launches.

The English-language version of Capital, plus Smooth and Nation from South Wales, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru will start broadcasting digitally around December 12th 2014. Only the BBC services are at 128kpbs, with the commercial stations offering 112kbps, all in stereo. Communicorp’s Heart North Wales service is not part of the line-up, although it is on the neighbouring Wrexham, Chester and Liverpool multiplex.

The multiplex will broadcast from transmitters at Arfon and Conway.

The line-up is somewhat different to the nine proposed services for the multiplex, made in 2008 when MuxCo won the licence from Ofcom.

Originally, services such as Traffic Radio and a Podcast Service were promised, but with changes in the radio industry these services are no longer available. It also proposed a new digital only service from Town and Country Broadcasting called Wales Live, but this station never started broadcasting.

The line-up from launch will be:

BBC Radio Wales
BBC Radio Cymru
Capital FM
Smooth Radio
Nation Radio
