Chris Moyles to be the saviour of digital radio?

It’s not often we report on rumours, but this is one which stands out for a number of reasons.

Pop Bitch has reported Chris Moyles is joining XFM in September to host the breakfast show. First, Chris is out of work and available, second, current host Jon Holmes has had a good run on XFM London, and third, we think there’s a bigger plan for XFM.

In December the station owners Global announced it would be launching new services nationally on Digital One – “The new deal with D1 sees Global take significant capacity nationally on D1, cementing its brand led strategy and increasing its national digital services to five, with more to come.”

We’re still waiting for Heart Extra, which was planned for ‘the new year’ and there’s space available from July when national rock station TeamRock disappears.

Global doesn’t comment on rumours, a spokesperson told RadioToday.

Putting a high profile, much-followed radio personality on DAB only across most of the country is a great move for digital radio – a real reason for thousands of people to go and buy (and actually use) a DAB set.

If the rumours are true – we’ll look forward to the saviour of radio becoming the saviour of digital radio.
