Lou Birt joins BBC Essex as Managing Editor

Former 5 live producer Lou Birt is the new Managing Editor at BBC Essex.

Lou trained as a newspaper journalist before working as Deputy Managing Editor at LBC. She edited 5 live programmes including Victoria Derbyshire and Richard Bacon. She has also worked across Local radio in the regions in roles ranging from Broadcast Journalist to Acting Editor at BBC WM.

Mick Rawsthorne, Head of Region at BBC East says: “I’m delighted that Lou will be leading the BBC Essex team. She’ll bring energy, enthusiasm and loads of radio experience.

“Lou has a very clear vision for what makes great local radio and I’m looking forward to seeing the station go from strength to strength under her leadership.”

Lou Birt added: “I’m excited to be joining the team at BBC Essex. The station has some great talent and Essex is a fascinating part of the country. I hope we’ll give people some really entertaining, exciting radio and get them talking.”
