OC and Richie win Red Bull Soapbox Race

20,000 spectators watched Absolute Radio’s breakfast team Christian O Connell and Richie win this year’s Red Bull Soapbox Race.

Teams were scored on speed, creativity and showmanship, for the event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles down a hill.

Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world since the first one in Brussels in the year 2000 – from Australia to South Africa, Helsinki to St. Louis, Jamaica to Italy.

“We couldn’t really nail one concept so we’ve gone for three, not sure if that works or not!,” the team said before the event.

On winning, OC tweeted: “It was terrifying yet one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done.” See the video of the event on Absolute Radio’s Facebook page.

OC also won the Gold Award at the Arqivas last week for the breakfast show.
