Ivan Brackenbury gets own BBC One series

BBC Comedy has commissioned a full series of Hospital People, starring former BBC, XFM and Virgin presenter Tom Binns.

The television show, featuring hospital radio character Ivan Brackenbury, had a pilot earlier this year.

The 6 x 30 series is written and created by Tom Binns and Matt Morgan, as Tom plays a raft of characters living their daily lives set in a fictional hospital.

Hospital People follows the lives of Brimlington hospital’s DJ Ivan Brackenbury, its ambitious manager, Susan Mitchell, the overenthusiastic hospital chaplain Father Kenny and serial hypochondriac patient, Terry Boyle. The new series will show how big decisions affect the little people, and raises the question – should half of these people even be in a hospital anyway?

It is commissioned for BBC Comedy by Alex Moody, after Shane Allen backed the Comedy Playhouse episode. It is the first series for BBC One from Rough Cut Television. The series will be executive produced by Ash Atalla and Jon Petrie, and produced by Emma Lawson.

Alex Moody says: “We’re delighted to be working with the exceptionally talented Tom Binns. He’s a brilliant multi-character performer and we can’t wait to introduce BBC One viewers to each and every one of his Hospital People.”

Ash Atalla, MD Roughcut TV says: “We’re really happy about our first BBC One series commission. Roughcut TV is all grown up and delighted to be making a show for Britain’s most prestigious channel. Hospital People is a testament to our talented team. And now we go to work to make this series the very best it can be.”

Jon Petrie, Roughcut TV Producer, added: “Tom Binns is an outstanding comedy talent. It’s great that BBC One has given Roughcut TV the opportunity to showcase the inner workings of Tom’s brilliant but seriously weird mind.”
