Magic Christmas to appear on digital radio

Bauer Media is launching another Magic pop-up service, with the addition of Magic Christmas this year.

Magic Christmas will follow in the footsteps of Smooth Christmas and Heart Christmas which have appeared nationally in previous years over the festive period.

It will broadcast on DAB Digital Radio across most of the UK via D1.

Tony Moorey, Group Content Director, Magic & Absolute Radio, told RadioToday: “Magic Christmas will play More of the Songs Yule Love, from The Ronnettes to The Pogues, Wham to The Waitresses, Mariah to Elton and so much more.

“Magic and its audience already loves anything festive, the Magic of Christmas concert at the London Palladium went on sale last Friday featuring performances by James Blunt, Seal, Gregory Porter and George Ezra. The show, hosted by new Magic Breakfast duo Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott sold out before the weekend was over, with more artists yet to be announced. The concert will be broadcast in full on Magic Radio and Magic Christmas.”

Well the introduction of this service will be great to hear but even better if Bauer and Global if they are looking, provide better audio streaming for those with better amplifiers. The 48aac and 128k mp3 online and the even worse 80k mp2 mono on dab multiplexes via some platforms leave a lot to be desired.
Are Bauer and Global really short of funds to stream online at bit rates of 320aac or hls or flac?

Good news, with Magic Christmas coming on air, probably in the middle of November, this means there won’t be Smooth or Heart Christmas as there was two years ago and last year, just imagine IF all three broadcast at the same time!!! Yes, it would be nice if Magic Christmas broadcasted in at least 112-bit stereo, probably that is asking too much.

It’s Ok, but Christmas Music Station is in it’s eighth year on iTunes this year and I will stick to that, thanks. In fact Magic would do well just to rebroadcast it.

Unless they’re reducing the bit rates of their other services, I can’t see how it could be added to the D1 platform. Sound Digital however, is a different story.
