Radio Derby wins BBC Local Station of the Year

BBC Radio Derby has been named Station of the Year at the 2017 Gillard Awards, which celebrate the corporation’s Local Radio stations.

The awards were given out at Coventry Cathedral on the evening of BBC Local Radio’s 50th birthday – Radio Leicester was the first station to go on air in November 1967.

BBC Radio Berkshire won two awards on the night – Excellence in Production and Moment of the Year. There were two golds for BBC Radio London – for Vanessa Feltz’s breakfast show and a joint Outstanding Contribution award with Radio Manchester for their coverage of this year’s terror attacks. Radio Manchester also won for Best Mid-Morning Presenter, which went to Mike Sweeney.

Other winners included BBC Wiltshire presenter James Thomas, BBC Radio Bristol for digital innovation, BBC Radio Leeds for its coverage of Huddersfield Town’s promotion to the Premier League, and Radio Kent – which won for its Original Journalism.

Earlier in the night, Director General Tony Hall announced plans for a ‘renaissance’ for BBC Local Radio – including the axing of the shared Evening Show across England, the cancellation of planned cuts to stations, and an end to targeting audiences over 50.

So BBC locals have been targeting over 50’s? Well I’m 67 and they haven’t included me. I dread to think what’s going to happen now!
