Former News UK broadcast engineer Chris Thame has passed away

Chris Thame, broadcast and resources manager at BATCAM and former engineer at News UK, has died following an accident.

Tributes have been paid to Chris, who was involved in an accident on his motorbike on his way into work on Tuesday.

During his time at News UK, he was key in the move to the company’s new building and also ran projects to build the new studios, including extra facilities at short notice when Times Radio was announced during the pandemic. He also mastered new skills about TV systems when Talk Radio became Talk TV.

Last year, Chris moved to BATCAM, a company involved in specialist cameras for sports coverage, where he was able to use his experience gained working with TalkSport.

He was also on the Radio TechCon committee for several years, ensuring the event ran smoothly behind-the-scenes and did three talks at the conference – Wireless on the Move (2019), Times Radio: Plandemic B (2020) and Talk TV: Telly on the Radio (2022).

A post on the Radio TechCon LinkedIn page said: “We are absolutely devastated to let you know that friend, colleague, former Radio TechCon presenter and committee member and general all-round top bloke, Chris Thame, has died.

“He was involved in a road traffic accident on his motorcycle journey into work on Tuesday (13th August).

“Sending all our love to his friends and family, and his work family at BATCAM and former colleagues at Wireless Group / News UK.

“He will be sorely and truly missed. Please keep his family, particularly his fiancée Esta, in your thoughts.”

BATCAM posted on its LinkedIn page: “We are very sad to report the loss of a key member of staff and all round top human, Chris Thame.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends and fiancée, Esta. RIP Chris, you will be missed. xx from all your colleagues and friends at BATCAM.”

Lloyd Davis, who is a broadcast Engineer at News UK and good friend of Chris, said: “Chris was loved by many people, and devoted 10 years of his life working at News UK, overseeing the Engineering team as Lead Stations Engineer before moving onto BATCAM in June 2023.

“The team here at News UK would like to send our love and thoughts to his friends and family, particularly his fiancée Esta.

“Chris, you will be sorely missed. We will make sure to have a pint for you in The Redwood.

“RIP, Love from us all x”
