Radio stations asked to air Venezuela DEC appeal

Commercial and community stations are being asked to air the DEC Venezuela Appeal.

Radiocentre is co-ordinating support across commercial radio and audio following twin earthquakes in Venezuela, which the Disasters Emergency Committee says struck within seconds of each other.

The DEC says 1,900 people have been killed so far, with the death toll rising and thousands of people missing or injured.

A new appeal has been voiced by British actor and presenter Sir Michael Palin. Radio stations are being encouraged to run the material as often as possible from today, with particular focus over the next two weeks.

Ten, 20 and 30 second versions are available through Audiotrack using JCN 3296662. Stations unable to access Audiotrack can contact its helpdesk, while community stations wanting to carry the appeal should contact the Community Media Association.

Radiocentre is asking stations to take part on humanitarian grounds to help fund the response to the disaster.

The DEC brings together 15 UK aid charities to raise money during overseas humanitarian crises. It says it has responded to 79 national appeals over 60 years, covering emergencies including earthquakes, hunger, conflict and climate change.
