Smart speaker protections move closer for radio

The government plans to designate Amazon Alexa and Alexa+, Google Assistant and Apple Siri as regulated Radio Selection Services under the Media Act 2024.

The move would require the platforms to support access to UK radio services and extend the rules to Amazon’s newer AI powered Alexa+ service.

Media Minister Ian Murray confirmed the government’s position in a statement to Parliament on Wednesday 15 July, with a short consultation now taking place.

The proposals follow recommendations published by Ofcom in March and are intended to ensure the protections remain effective as voice assistants develop. The government has indicated that future AI upgrades to Google Assistant and Siri are also likely to be covered.

Radiocentre Chief Executive Matt Payton welcomed the move and said: “This is a significant move towards implementation of these new rules.”

He added: “We look forward to continuing to work with government and Ofcom on the new framework which we expect to come into force next year.”

Radiocentre will submit an industry response to the consultation, which closes on 9 September 2026.
