Charmaine Frank has become the new presenter of Voices of Africa on Voice FM in Southampton, airing Tuesdays at 4pm.
The show, launched by Victoria Ugwoeme in November 2022, was Southampton’s first African radio programme.
After three and a half years, Victoria is stepping down to focus on shaping food and health policy in the city, having been elected Chair of Southampton Food Partnership in 2024.
Charmaine, originally from Gweru, Zimbabwe, previously co-hosted on 98.4 FM Midlands with DJ Blake before moving to the UK three years ago.
She aims to use the show to explore African cultures and music, introducing listeners to a wide range of sounds from across the continent.
Charmaine wants to create a space where audiences can discover new music, stories and traditions, regardless of their background. She said she hopes people will “see Africa through a different lens” and learn about its diverse cultures and talented artists.
Xan Phillips, director and station manager, said Victoria brought warmth and energy to the show and that Charmaine’s experience and passion for African music will help continue its legacy at Voice FM.
