BBC Radio Manchester presenter Mike Sweeney was recognised as one of Salford’s 100 Heroes during his show this morning, with Salford Mayor Paul Dennett making the announcement live on air.
Paul joined Mike to discuss Salford 100, a series of events marking the city’s centenary. The celebrations include highlighting individuals who have made a significant impact on Salford, both past and present.
During the conversation, Paul explained that the Salford 100 Heroes project is to celebrate the everyday and the ordinary, as well as well-known figures such as Albert Finney, John Virgo, Sheila Delaney, and Ewan MacColl.
He emphasised the importance of recognising people who have contributed to the city’s identity.
Paul surprised Mike by naming him as one of the 100 Heroes, thanking him for his dedication to Salford and for staying true to his roots.
Mike responded by expressing his gratitude for the recognition. As part of the tribute, Paul presented Mike with a bag containing items representing the city, including an image of Salford.
