Radio City sign set to leave Liverpool skyline

Liverpool’s Radio City 96.7 sign could soon disappear from St Johns Beacon after more than 25 years.

A planning application has been lodged with Liverpool City Council to remove the branding from the Grade II listed tower and replace the existing signage band with a new digital LED display.

Radio City moved into St Johns Beacon in 2000, with its name becoming a familiar part of the Liverpool skyline. The station was rebranded as Hits Radio Liverpool in 2024 and broadcasts from the tower ended later that year.

The building has since been empty, while the Radio City 96.7 branding has remained in place.

According to a heritage statement submitted with the application, the signage now gives the wrong impression about the building’s connection with the station.

It says: “St John’s Beacon is continuing to be used to advertise a business that is no longer resident, and which retains no relationship with the building.

“This also confuses its own identity, giving the incorrect impression that it continues to be occupied by and part of the radio station.”

If permission is granted, the Radio City lettering will be replaced by an animated LED screen. No other external changes to the beacon or tower are proposed.

Planning permission for the Radio City signage was originally granted in 1999, with installation completed the following year.

Liverpool City Council has yet to confirm when the latest application will be considered.
