Smart speaker providers could face enforcement action if they fail to make radio services easy for listeners to access.
Ofcom has opened a consultation on its proposed Code of Practice for designated radio selection services under Part 6 of the Media Act.
Radio selection services include voice activated platforms available through connected devices, which listeners can use to find and play internet radio stations.
Earlier this year, Ofcom recommended that Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Siri should be brought within the new regulatory system. The Secretary of State is expected to decide later this year which services will be designated.
The Media Act is intended to protect access to radio as more listening moves online and people increasingly use smart speakers and other voice controlled devices.
Ofcom’s website sets out recommended actions for designated service providers to follow when meeting their duties under the legislation.
Once the regime takes effect, Ofcom will have enforcement powers to act when providers do not comply with their obligations.
The regulator is seeking industry views on its proposals and how the new arrangements should work in practice. Responses can be submitted until 9 November 2026, with the final Code expected to be published in spring 2027.
