The BBC has cancelled plans for a new studio for The Archers in Birmingham, citing the need to cut costs.
The Archers, which has been recorded in Birmingham for 75 years, may now be produced outside the city for the first time.
The BBC had previously promised to build a bespoke studio for the Radio 4 drama at the Tea Factory, its new hub in Digbeth, central Birmingham.
A BBC spokesperson said the corporation is reviewing existing studio facilities across the UK and considering other options in the West Midlands.
They stated that the aim is to “deliver significant savings whilst also maintaining The Archers’ high production standards.”
The Archers first aired nationally in 1951 and recently marked its 75th anniversary. West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker expressed disappointment at the prospect of the show leaving Birmingham, describing it as “a key part of our broadcasting heritage.”
Richard said he would meet with Director General Matt Brittin to discuss options to keep the programme in the city.
The BBC confirmed the production team is still expected to move to Digbeth in early 2028, but the new studio will not be built.
It also said that cast members are in the studio about eight days a month, with many travelling from across the UK and that no final decision has been made on the show’s future location.
