Cornwall’s Rewind Radio raises £3,000 at awards

Cornwall’s Rewind Radio has recognised community volunteers and raised more than £3,000 for charity at its Cornwall’s Heroes Awards.

The event was held at Tregenna Castle in St Ives on Friday 30 October, with the station’s daytime presenter Jack Murley hosting the ceremony. The annual awards recognise individuals, charities and community groups across Cornwall.

Charlie’s Star Charity was named Winner of Winners and also received the Health and Wellbeing Hero and Team Spirit awards. The charity provides fully funded respite breaks for families across the South West who have lost a child under the age of 19.

The evening raised £2,598.92 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association through an auction and raffle, with a further £442.39 raised for Charlie’s Star Charity.

Guests heard from Claire Sharp, known as the C’oar’nish Maid, who plans to row 3,000 miles solo across the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua in December. Her challenge will raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of her friend Dean.

Rock Choir Cornwall opened the evening, while Laura Kate performed during the meal. Nan Woods, who features on the station’s Big Drive Home quiz Nan That Tune, presented an award, and Love DeluxX performed after the ceremony.

Other winners included Michelle Robinson-Clements as Animal Welfare Champion, Aimee-Leigh Jones for the Carers Award, Elliot Wills as Child of Courage, Fin Irwin as Community Champion, Harvey Allen for the Courage Award and The Grower for Environmental and Sustainability Advocate.

Ben Jordan received Fundraising Hero, Barrie Burns was recognised for Lifetime Achievement, Tye Reeves won Local Business Leader and Joseph Adams was named Rising Star. Lee Baker received Sports Personality, Andy Rance was named Unsung Hero, Tony Hendra received Volunteer of the Year and Archie Williams was recognised as Young Sports Personality.

Cornwall’s Rewind Radio Managing Director Richard Woods said: “Every nominee had a remarkable story to tell, and it was a privilege to celebrate their achievements.”
