Former ITV Sport commentator James Allen is joining BBC Radio 5 live in time for the 2012 Formula One season.
He replaces David Croft who has left to be part of the Sky Sports F1 team.
Writing on his website, James said: “I’m delighted to announce that I am joining the BBC Radio 5 Live team as F1 correspondent and lead commentator this season. I’m really happy about this; 5 live is the default setting on my radio at home and in the car, it’s a great institution and I’m proud to be part of it. I’ve never done radio before and I’m really looking forward to adapting to a new medium.”
James has worked in F1 for around two decades and joined ITV as a pit lane reporter in 1997. He took over as the channel’s lead commentator in 2001, replacing Murray Walker. He was with the commercial channel until 2009 when the sports rights were taken over by the BBC again. He has most recently been working for Ten Sport in Australia and its understood he will continue to contribute to the channel’s shows alongside his role for 5 live.
