BBC Radio 2 newsreader Clare Runacres has apologised after getting her words ‘mixed up’ during a bulletin.
Instead of saying mix-up, when referring to a story about NHS England, Clare said cock-up before carrying on with a slight hint of laughter in her voice.
After the bulletin, Clare tweeted to say sorry “Sooo sorry to @RealKenBruce listeners on @BBCRadio2 for my little slip in the news!” followed by “not a word I’d ever anticipated using on the radio”.
A recording of the incident was quickly uploaded to the Radiofail website, and we’ve embedded it below.

It made me smile and it was obviously unintentional even if it was possibly more accurate
Thought I’d misheard, but made me laugh.
The term ‘cock up’ is not as rude as some prudes would want it to be. It refers to a mistake in the printing world when a letter is ‘cocked up’ out of alignment. Also when an old fashioned pistol wasn’t primed for shooting it was ‘cocked up’ and wouldn’t fire.
I heard it! Made my day! Made me laugh out loud!!
I was going to say – cock-up is absolutely fine for broadcast. Heard it said on air many times.
Made me chuckle all day
Brilliant, made us laugh!!
I nearly wet myself!
Wonderful mix-up, Clare and thanks to Ken for not jumping all over it. He is a gentleman, but must have been laughing along with the rest of us.
Heard it whilst driving and made me laugh out loud.
I was driving when I heard her say this. I laughed so hard I almost crashed my car ?
My reaction was the same as the last comment – brilliant.
I heard this and have to give her full credit for keeping it together and not bursting out laughing like many of us were. A TRUE professional, well done.
I laughed out loud. No offence given, definitely none taken here.
I was cleaning the bath at the time and it made me laugh! Kept smiling every time I thought of it.
Heard it in real time and it was so funny and unexpected that I did have a good laugh! However, Clare just carried on, whereas I would have been a wreck, if I had done it! Superb and glad to hear it again and I can’t hear a slight hint of laughter in her voice. Sheer Professionalism!
I said out loud, ” she said cock up!!” although listening completely on my own. Made me laugh for ages – well done Ken for being so discreet. Wonder what it was like in the studio…..
