Colin Berry, who was with the BBC for more than 30 years, has passed away at the age of 79.
He started his radio career at Radio Caroline in 1965 before moving to BBC Radio Medway. This was followed by a short stint at Radio 1 writing and presenting programme trails.
In 1973, Colin joined BBC Radio 2, where he stayed for thirty three years. He was the station’s first overnight host when it began broadcasting 24-hours. In addition to this he also covered daytime shows, including for Sir Terry Wogan, and was a presenter on BBC Three Counties Radio from 2004 to 2019.
In television, between 1978 and 2002, he became known as the person reading out the UK jury’s results for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Helen Thomas, head of Radio 2, said: “All of us at Radio 2 were saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Berry, who was part of our on air family for many years. We send our condolences to his family and friends.”
There will be an hour long tribute to Colin on BBC Three Counties Radio on Saturday (19th April) at 2pm presented by Justin Dealey who is married to Colin’s daughter Marina.
