John Pickford receives MBE after 46-year career
John Pickford has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List in recognition of his services to broadcasting and local news.
It comes as he retires after 46 years in British radio journalism.
The honour acknowledges his long tenure with Bauer Media, where he served as News Editor in Chief.
John began his career in print before moving into radio at Piccadilly in 1979. Throughout his career he reported on major events including the British Airtours air crash and the Manchester riots, and his reporting contributed to social reforms such as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme known as Clare’s Law.
Reflecting on his honour, John said: “I see this as recognition of the fact that commercial radio news remains a trusted source of information for so many people who don’t necessarily listen to speech-based radio or watch TV news bulletins. I’ve been privileged to have reported on part of the history of Manchester and we even helped save lives with campaigns such as Clare’s Law.”
The New Year Honours also recognised a number of other figures with strong connections to radio and broadcasting. Charlotte Moore, former BBC Chief Content Officer and a senior BBC executive responsible for content across television and digital platforms, was appointed OBE for her services to broadcasting and media in the same honours list.
Broadcaster and presenter Gabby Logan, known for her work across television and radio including BBC Radio 5 Live, received an OBE for services to sports broadcasting and charity. She has presented major sporting coverage and continues to be a prominent voice in British broadcasting.
Commentator Clive Tyldesley was also made an OBE for services to sports media. His career includes decades of high-profile football commentary on television and radio, making him a familiar voice to audiences across the UK.
In Northern Ireland, BBC broadcaster Helen Mark was awarded an MBE for her long-standing contribution to radio. Helen has presented a variety of programmes for BBC Northern Ireland and regional radio.
