History repeated itself this morning as Sara Cox launched another breakfast show on a national BBC radio station.
It was 26 years ago when Sara started Breakfast on BBC Radio 1, and today, she joined a small list of presenters to repeat the task years later, on Radio 2.
Tom Hanks was on form as her first guest with a pre-recorded interview, congratulating Sara on her new gig.
Tom told Sara that the uncertainty around beginning a new film project only fades once people have settled into working together. He said confidence arrives “by day three”.
The actor also responded to a listener’s story about two non-verbal brothers who used Woody to help develop their communication skills. Tom then recorded a message in character, telling them: “You’ve got a friend in me.”

Sara opened the programme with Lizzo’s About Damn Time, followed by Finally by CeCe Peniston. She joked there was “No message in the music”, before playing part of Etta James’ At Last. Sara played a snippet of the intro to ‘At Last’ by Etta James, followed by Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘stupid song’.
The programme includes features carried over from Sara’s afternoon show, including Kids In the Car, alongside new breakfast segments Surprise and Shine and Let’s hear it for the noise.
Later this week, Sara is due to welcome Olivia Rodigero on Wednesday and Matt Damon on Friday.
Other former Radio 1 breakfast DJs to also host the same show on Radio 2 are Chris Evans (Radio 1, 1995–1997; Radio 2, 2010–2018) and Zoe Ball (Radio 1, 1998–2000; Radio 2, 2019–2024).
