Hundreds audition for Beacon

More than 200 people have auditioned for a job as breakfast show co-presenter at Beacon in Wolverhampton – including X Factor star Wagner.

Auditions took place yesterday (Sunday) after the station had launched a competition to find someone to join Nigel Freshman while his regular co-host Jo Jesmond is on maternity leave.

We [link=https://radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.6677.17]previously reported[/link] that Wagner had applied for the job – yesterday he turned up at the auditions to wow the judges, who say he was put through the same process as everyone else.

Wagner's father was a radio DJ in his native Brazil, and after his longer-than-expected stint on the ITV reality singing show last year he's obviously keen to pursue a media career.

All the candidates had a couple of minutes to impress a judging panel and record some audio in the studios. The station says it's looking for someone who 'has a unique personality and is up for a laugh.'

Ten people will now be shortlisted – these finalists will be announced by 'Fresh' on the show in two weeks. They will then have their chance to prove they have a talent for live presenting when they’re invited in to the studio over the course of a week. The successful applicant will be revealed in February and will co-host the breakfast show until Jo returns.

Darrell Woodman, Beacon programme director told RadioToday.co.uk: "Iit was a great day- people were queuing from 7.15 in the morning and the last audition took place about 5pm. We were really impressed with the turn out – everyone was fantastic and really put a lot of effort into their audition.
We met some interesting and entertaining people along the way and it’s going to be a tough job to whittle it down to the final 10."

He added: "We’d like to thank everyone that waited in the queue – the lucky candidate will be given an exciting placement – full of laughter and potential stardom! Filling Jo’s shoes won’t be easy but we’re not after another Jo, we’re after someone with a unique personality of their own and someone up for a challenge!"
