Westminster Waves to launch for London students

Westminster Waves will launch on 1st June as a community radio station for students across London.

The station is powered by students and staff at the University of Westminster, with funding from the Quintin Hogg Trust, and will broadcast from campuses in central London and Harrow.

Rather than operating only as an in house student radio station, Westminster Waves is being positioned as a city wide service for students studying across London’s universities, colleges and higher education institutions.

Its output will cover areas including housing, transport, nightlife, careers, culture, music, wellbeing, politics and entrepreneurship, while giving students practical experience in broadcasting, journalism, podcasting, audio production and media content creation.

Programming will include specialist music shows, speech and discussion, news and current affairs, arts and culture, multilingual content, live event broadcasts and collaborations with student communities and organisations across the capital.

Jason Rosam, Station Manager of Westminster Waves, said: “Westminster Waves is about creating a shared voice for students across London. This is not simply a student radio station for one university, it’s a community radio station for the capital’s entire student population.”

Jason said the station would “celebrate the creativity, diversity and energy of student life across the city” while giving students opportunities to develop broadcasting and media skills in a professional environment.

Alongside the launch, the University of Westminster is expanding its professional audio and podcast training with a CPD accredited Introduction to Podcasting short course.

The two day course will cover editorial planning, recording, editing, storytelling, pitching, interview techniques, scripting, publishing and marketing.

It will be delivered by media professionals including Simon Woolcott, a former Gaydar Radio presenter and podcast producer, alongside University of Westminster audio specialists.
