James Alexander Gordon dies at age of 78

The former BBC radio announcer James Alexander Gordon, who read the classified football results for 40 years, has died.

The corporation’s Head of BBC Sports News and BBC Radio Sport, Richard Burgess, made the announcement on Twitter, saying: “I’m very sad to let you know that James Alexander Gordon has died at the age of 78. A true gentleman, he will be greatly missed at BBC Sport.”

James – known in the businesses as ‘JAG’ – retired last summer following surgery to remove his larynx after being diagnosed with cancer. His role on Saturday afternoons, which he’d done since 1974, was taken over by Charlotte Green.

He had worked in music publishing before joining the BBC in 1972, becoming an announcer and newsreader, mostly on Radio 2 until the early 1990s.

It’s understood he died in the early hours of this morning (18th August) at the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent hospice in Reading, after battling cancer. He was married to Julia, with a son, David, and two grandchildren, Molly and Martha. David has been on air with Chelmer FM and is also still a regular voice on Southend Hospital Radio where he is a football commentator.

5 live Controller Jonathan Wall wrote on Twitter: “A most humble and gentle man who battled adversity to become ‘Mr Football Results’ football results. Rest in peace James Alexander Gordon.”

Ian Dennis, BBC Radio’s Senior Football Reporter, told 5 live: “He was a real gentleman. I listened to his voice countless times. Growing up listening to Sports Report there were two memorable legends – Peter Jones and James Alexander Gordon. There’ll be various broadcasters who tried to do the classified results as well as he did, and failed.”

Mark Lawrenson told 5 live: “He was one of those who had an absolutely instantly recognisable voice. I shouted at him every week when he gave the results that meant the demise of Preston North End, but I forgave him.”
