Radio Plymouth presenter heard in Hungary

Radio Plymouth’s Tim Manns has been inadvertently entertaining locals and tourists in Hungary after a problem with the Big Wheel in Budapest.

They switched on their cabin’s English commentary expecting to learn more about Budapest, only to hear a recording featuring Tim Manns, and local historian Chris Robinson.

It turns out the wheel was the same one that sat on the Plymouth Hoe until November last year, and no-one had got round to turning off the commentary of Plymouth’s sights and history.

Mervin Metcalf lives in London, and heard it whilst he was there on a stag do in June: “So the commentary options were on or off and so we thought this might be quite cool to get quite high up in Budapest and get a bit of the history, so we turned it on and to our surprise we were getting the history of Plymouth and some of the landmarks of Plymouth.”

Thomas Kadar is CEO of Sziget Cultural Management who are operating the wheel in Budapest. He told Radio Plymouth it was set up quickly and it took them a few days to turn off all the commentaries, but he wasn’t it aware some had heard the Plymouth version whilst using the ride: “Today is the first day I hear about it, I didn’t hear about it at all that the commentary was on, because we wanted to switch it off so that we didn’t have any commentary on the wheel so it’s the first time that I heard it was on for a few days.”
