BBC gets closer to Salford

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has told MPs the BBC should carry out its planned relocation of various departments, including Radio 5 Live, to Salford Quays. Jowell wants to make sure the move will happen regardless of the licence fee settlement, which is due in the new year.

BBC bosses have said that the £400 million move is dependent on a satisfactory increase in licence fee. But Jowell told the House of Commons: "I know that many members of this House have taken a keen interest in the BBC's proposed move to the North West. I can say this afternoon that it is my expectation that the BBC will make that move. The Government will ensure that the structure of the licence fee makes clear that the move to the North West should happen."
