UTV gains ground over SMG

As a merger between UTV and SMG gathers pace, RadioToday.co.uk has learnt the deal will see the Ulster broadcast take a 54% share of the combined group, leaving the Virgin Radio owner SMG with the rest. UTV’s John McCann will also become chief executive of the merged company.

Scott Taunton is tipped to become head of the joint radio division, which will see him gain overall control of Virgin Radio.

Negotiations have taken longer than expected, but are now at a crucial stage, with an announcement expected soon.

Earlier this week Virgin Radio boss Fru Hazlitt resigned, thought to be caused by the up-coming merger. New reports suggest she will take up a new post as head of GCap Media stations in London.
