While some stations are actively banning Sir Cliff Richard songs from their playlists, Hull-based Viking FM has started a Christmas campaign to get him back in the charts.
The station has begun a #cliffiscool promotion on Facebook and Twitter after thousands of listeners said they wanted to hear the singer’s 1988 Christmas number one Mistletoe and Wine.
The Bauer station claims they’re now playing Cliff Richard more than any other radio station in the UK.
Programme Director Jono Symonds told RadioToday.co.uk: “Over the years there has been much controversy around how much radio airplay Cliff has received and we think the UK should show the love to our musical legend and celebrate his success.”
The station has also made ‘CLIFF IS COOL’ t-shirts, which they’re selling for £5 each in aid of Viking FM’s Cash4Kids appeal. The charity is raising money for Charlie Hook, a 5 year old boy from Hull who has a very rare form of cancer and needs vital treatment in the USA to give him a fighting chance to recover.
They’re also encouraging listeners to buy Mistletoe and Wine by Sir Cliff to get him back in the festive charts.
Last month, Absolute Radio created lots of publicity for themselves by banning Cliff’s records from their new digital station Absolute Radio 60s.
