Yorkshire Coast Radio marks 20th birthday

UKRD-owned Yorkshire Coast Radio has celebrated its 20th birthday with a party featuring entertainment from X Factor winner Matt Cardle.

Around 250 guests, comprising staff, clients and friends of the station attended the event in the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa.

Yorkshire Coast Radio Managing Director Chris Sigsworth has been at the station since day one and was a presenter on launch day, 7th November 1993. Since then he’s worked his way up to be Programme Controller, Station Manager and now MD. He told RadioToday: “I take great pride in what Yorkshire Coast Radio has achieved in the area over the last 20 years, and thank all those that have worked for, or with, the station for their contribution to our success.”

In a speech to guests on the night, Chris thanked UKRD Chief Executive, William Rogers, for his support and belief in the station. He also praised the station’s team that has delivered a record-breaking performance across all areas of the business in the last year.

The latest Q3 2013 RAJAR research show a reach of 44% for the station – its highest since figures were first published.

Chris added: “The world and media landscape may have changed greatly since 1993, but I believe the role and appreciation of a truly local radio station is just as strong today as it was 20 years ago.”

Last month, Ofcom turned down an application for a community radio station to launch in Scarborough.
