First UK Radio Drama Festival launched

Moving Theatre and Herne Bay Town Partners have teamed up to produce the first ever UK Radio Drama Festival.

“The Winters Tales” event will take place in Herne Bay, Kent, from 26 February – 1 March, celebrating radio drama from across the world. It takes as its theme, radio drama that has an association with theatre for the stage.

This association will include the play’s origin (eg originally a stage play), the way in which it was recorded or its subject. The Winters Tales also celebrates an English seaside community in winter. Herne Bay is a quintessentially seaside town within easy reach of London. Listening sessions will take place in warm, cosy, intimate venues, gathered round the “wireless”, enjoying traditional English tea and toast, crumpets and scones. A complementary programme of talks and other events will take place in the evening.

Organisers say: “Our festival is for everyone; professionals and local enthusiasts to take part and enjoy the drama filling their town. We are working to ensure that local people can hear the dramas during the festival at home and throughout the town. and we intend to offer an “audience prize” voted on by local people.

“We will be offering a cash prize of £2000 for The Winters Tales prize, chosen by the jury. We will also be offering a cash prize (subject to local funding) for the audience favourite, voted for by the listening public. And a cash prize for the Jury’s selected short drama.”

Submissions are welcome by CD or sent as an audio file and full details can be found on radiodramafestival.org.uk.
