Five new comedy showcases, with a mixture of new and established talent, will air on BBC Radio 2 next month.
The programmes are produced by BBC Radio Comedy and Hat Trick Productions, and recorded in front of a live studio audience.
The five shows are Ankle Tag starring Elis James and Katy Wix, The Peterford Golf Club written by and starring Simon Farnaby, Barbara Nice by Janice Connolly, The Tim Vine Chat Show and The King’s Men starring Robert Webb and Terry Mynott.
Julia McKenzie, Acting Head of BBC Radio Comedy, says: “Radio 2 continues to nurture and support new comedy, and it is fantastic to be able to bring such a range of comedic talent and Showcases to the network.”
Lewis Carnie, Head of Programmes for BBC Radio 2, says: “I’m delighted to have a new raft of Comedy Showcases, it exemplifies Radio 2’s commitment to original and distinctive content. Radio 2 has been a valuable launch pad for new comedy in recent years, seeing the sitcom Miranda Hart’s Joke Shop go on to become the highly acclaimed Miranda series on BBC One, plus Matt Lucas’s And The Winner Is… commissioned for Radio 2, made into a BBC television series, The Matt Lucas Awards.”
The week of Radio 2 Comedy Showcases will culminate in the live final of the BBC New Comedy Award which will air during Radio 2’s Steve Wright in the Afternoon Show on Friday 20 November, hosted by Patrick Kielty.
The BBC last week launched ‘online first’ listening for selected speech-based programming from across BBC Radio. Each episode of the BBC Radio 2 Comedy Showcases 2015 will appear first from Monday 9 November on the station website and in the BBC iPlayer radio app before they go out on air (from Monday 16 November).
