Stephanie Hirst is to present a special show on BBC Radio Manchester counting down the 40 best-selling vinyl singles of all time.
The former national chart show presenter will host Stephanie Hirst’s Vinyl 40 on Tuesday 29th December from 12pm till 3pm.
The programme celebrates the recent rise in vinyl sales, with many bought as Christmas presents this year, and looks back at vinyl purchased between 1960 and 1989.
Stephanie will be playing all 40 live from the original vinyl copies, which make up part of her own record collection.
She told RadioToday: “We started by looking at the list from UK’s best-selling singles of all time, compiled on the 50th anniversary of the official chart back in 2002.
With my chart aid, Lee Thompson, who has been an enormous help – we’ve gone back into each of the original decades to find as much reliable information as we possibly could from the time, although it’s worth noting that many gold and million-selling awards from those eras were very much based on figures that told how many copies were delivered to shops, rather than how many actual singles were sold!
“We’ve only looked at estimated sales of the original 7” version of every track. Nobody has ever attempted to compile a chart like this ever before….and we quickly realized why – accurate numbers are almost impossible to lock down!”
