5 live Controller ridicules closure report

The Controller of 5 live, Jonathan Wall, has called a report on its possible closure as ‘nonsense’.

The story, published today by The Guardian, says the BBC is looking at closing the AM service or moving it online only to save all or some of its £66m budget.

The BBC has officially denied the speculative report, but doesn’t rule out some changes by saying “There is no plan along those lines”.

A number of tweets from Jonathan Wall say there is no truth in it at all. He says it is nonsense.

5 live and 5 live Sports Extra have 6.7m listeners across the UK, and the commercial sector is about to air more rival stations for 5 live, as UTV launches talkRADIO and talkSPORT 2 in the coming weeks, and LBC continues to grow nationally.
