Almost 100 stations celebrate Local Radio Day

Community, commercial and BBC local radio stations came together on Friday to celebrate Local Radio Day 2017.

“Local Radio Day magnifies what proper local radio stations do day in, day out. Whether it is providing essential news and information, supporting local campaigns, attending community events or being the voice of the community when needed, local radio is special. Therefore, it is only right and proper that it be celebrated in this way,” said Dave Coull, UKRD’s Group Content Director.

Whether it is opening the doors of a radio station to the public and offering guided tours of the studios or dedicating the day to fundraising for local charities the activity done by those participating in Local Radio Day was wide-ranging.

Now in its second year, Local Radio Day was once again supported by the team at Ignite Jingles who produced a bespoke jingle package for day. Chris Stevens, Managing Director of Ignite Jingles, said on confirming his support, “We’re delighted to be supporting Local Radio Day again. We already work with many local broadcasters across the UK and beyond and anything that helps fly the flag and promote the essential service local radio provides, is brilliant for the whole industry.”

UKRD’s Group Content Director, Dave Coull confirmed that the company’s Group Production Manager, Colin McGinness, also created a special production package for all participating local radio stations to complement the Local Radio Day jingle package. “The activity and events planned by those radio stations participating in Local Radio Day coupled with the jingles from Chris and the production produced by Colin made for a great day’s radio.” said Coull.

William Rogers, UKRD’s Chief Executive said: “Radio stations from across the sector were represented on Local Radio Day, from hospital, prison and school radio, to community, commercial and the BBC. All celebrated local radio engagement in the areas and communities they are proud to serve and broadcast to. I am delighted with the number of proper local radio stations that participated in Local Radio Day this year.”
