Offensive language puts Swindon 105.5 in breach

Community radio station Swindon 105.5 has been found in breach of the Ofcom broadcast code for playing a song with offensive language in it.

It happened during the Latin Hot show which plays music for the local Hispanic community on Saturday evenings. A listener alerted Ofcom to offensive language in the music track I’m A Freak by Enrique Iglesias, broadcast at approximately 19:25.

This song included the following lyric: “I love the way she gets so physical, fu*ks like an animal”.

The station said this particular song was played from CD and it’s the responsibility of the presenters to check any music not played from the station’s database. The presenter, in defence, said the song was checked but the word was believed to be “Funk”.

Ofcom research on offensive language indicates that the word “fuck” and other variations of it are considered by audiences to be among the most offensive language. The regulator said it was likely that children would have been listening to it so was a breach of Rule 1.14 of the Code.
